John Shipton tours relentlessly, speaking and advocating for his son Julian Assange. We are pleased to welcome him back  to Northern Rivers. The final decision on Julian’s and his family’s struggle against his extradition will be handed down by the UK Court on 20th May.

David Heilpern is a lawyer and former Senior Civil Magistrate  and author .He is the current Dean of Law at Southern Cross University .David’s commitment is that application of the law should always recognise the principles of harm reduction. He is a long standing supporter of justice for Julian Assange.

Mia Armitage is a presenter,  an executive producer, a reporter at the  Community Newsroom,  She covers local, interstate & international topics. Online her reach extends to the northern hemisphere. She has been speaking up for Julian for many years.

US President Joe Biden responding to a question called out by a journalist, recently made the comment that the US is “considering” dropping the prosecution of Julian Assange. How seriously we take what appeared to be an off the cuff remark remains to be seen.

In 2012 Assange was granted political asylum by the Ecuadorian Government and spent 7 years besieged under the permanent watchful eye of heavy police guard outside the Embassy.

Thursday 11th April marked 5 years to the day since Assange was dragged out of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London by The London Metropolitan Police Force.

On being removed under obvious protest by Assange and with minimum legal process he was taken to London High Security Prison Belmarsh where he has remained incarcerated ever since.

Even though no charges of crime committed in the UK have been brought against him by UK authorities  Assange spent much of that time in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.

As article 39 of the Magna Carta drawn up and presented to King John at Runnymede 1215 as a challenge to his tyrannical rule states: “No free man shall be seized, imprisoned, dispossessed, outlawed, exiled or ruined in any way, nor in any way proceeded against, except by the lawful judgement of his peers and the law of the land”.

Perhaps 800 years of amendments have rendered  the statute irrelevant.

It would certainly appear so in the case of Julian Assange.

The full details of Julian’s case have never been subjected to ‘lawful judgment of his peers and the law of the land’. His lawyers claim that if they had, the case would have been thrown out of court long ago.

So has it taken us 800 years to begin the return to the tyranny of the reign of King John?

21st February  a UK high Court following a hearing to consider Julian’s application for appeal against extradition  delayed handing down their decision.

Essentially more time was given to the US to present their case by asking for assurances that Julian ,not being a US citizen, would be protected by 1st amendment rights and that he would not face the death penalty.

Nothing was given to Julian-not even any words of compassion for him or his family and he remains incarcerated in  Belmarsh- only to prolong his agony.

Assurances were given but they according to most analysis and legal commentary they appear to be nothing but fudges and the US appears  to remain determined to have Assange extradited..

The UK judges will pass down their decision on 20th May.

A critical date for Julian .

A decision as to whether he is granted an appeal or whether he will immediately be extradited to the US..

Apart from defending the principles of fee press and free speech Julian Assange has sacrificed so much for, its also about saving Julian’s life after years of deprivation and the toll it has taken  on his mental and physical health.

According to various opinion polls 80% of Australians support allowing Julian to come home.

We demand  the Australian Government take all diplomatic and political measures available to it to bring the persecution of Australian Citizen by so called ally  and friend the Unites States to an immediate end.

As Prime Minister Albanese said himself ‘Enough is Enough’.

The campaign to Free Julian Assange grows ever louder.
